Awe, smoothies. My passion for many years at my juice bar, Mana Juice in Kona. I know from both conversation and training employees that making a delicious and nutritious smoothie doesn’t always come naturally.
The art of making the perfect smoothie is really easy, and once you get the hang of it, you’ll be createing your own blends that will satisfy your soul!
FRUIT– Is a smoothie without fruit still called a smoothie? I like to pair fruits with more sugar like mango, pineapple and banana with less sugary fruits like blueberries, strawberries and dragonfruit. Except for in this sweet and creamy HAWAIIAN HONEY SMOOTHIE.
PRO TIP- Frozen Fruit is the best to achieve a thick and refreshingly cold smoothie.
VEGGIES- A smoothie is the perfect way to get a big portion of the necessary veggies your body needs. Spinach is my favorite smoothie veggie. It’s easy to hide and you can use a lot! Kale is another favorite, but the flavor isn’t as easy to hide….. kale smoothies are like fine wine or black coffee…. takes a little practice. ☕️🍷 For the best green smoothie recipe try Mana Juice’s WAIPIO SMOOTHIE.
LIQUID– Lot’s of options here! Water, being the cheapest, easiest and healthiest, almond milk being my go-to or juice if you like it sweet. Your smoothie should have less than 3/4 liquid.
PRO TIP– Layer veggies, fruit then ice to reach the desired amount (or fill your cup with veggies, fruit & ice, dump in blender.) 😉 Then, fill liquid 1/2-3/4 full. Go slow here so you don’t waste or end up with a watery smoothie.
ICE– Yes, ice is good! But not too much! If your smoothie fruit is super frozen, it’s not really necessary, unless you want your smoothie on the thicker side. If you’re using protein powder, I definitely recommend ice for a refreshing treat, except for in this IMMUNITY SMOOTHIE.
PRO TIP– Try using smaller ice cubes if possible to avoid injuring your blender and a watery smoothie.

🍌Freeze peeled bananas in a freezer bag or Tupperware. The browner the banana the sweeter the smoothie. Remove frozen bananas from the bag and cut into 2 inch pieces. Return the banana pieces back to the bag or Tupperware and return to the freezer. Trust me, this is the easiest method for freezing bananas. If you cut them first, you will have to re-cut them again after they freeze.
PRO TIP- Be sure your frozen bananas stay frozen from the time you cut them and return them to the freezer so you don’t have to re-cut them again.
🍍Cut fresh pineapple by removing the top, bottom and spiky skin. Cut pineapple into 1 inch chunks and freeze in a single layer. Once frozen, cut apart and refreeze. 🥭 This goes for mango or any other fun tropical fruit.
🍓Organic matters when it comes to berries ❤️ Buy organic berries in bulk when they’re in season, wash, dry and freeze….or purchase in the freezer section at the grocery store. That’s the best place to find frozen Acai and Pitaya for this Puna Berry or Dragonfly smoothie…. unless your in Brazil 🤷🏽♀️
🍃Fresh Organic Spinach & Kale- Toss it in the freezer when it’s fresh. If you freeze it in a bag you can crush it into tiny pieces, making it easy to hide these veggies in ANYTHING!
PRO TIP- Buy fresh organic spinach in bulk to use for salads and other recipes. When the spinach starts to wilt, toss it in the freezer for soups and smoothies.
PLANT PROTEIN– Not all protein is created equal! Plant Protein is my go to protein. It usually has better ingredients, non-gmo, organic, all that good stuff and doesn’t mess with the tummy like whey protein. I’ve had the opportunity to try several different brands of plant protein and Orgain is hands down the best. (I’m not getting paid to say this either) It’s the smoothest, best tasting, no grit powder. It comes in a few flavors too and they’re all delish: chocolate, vanilla and even peanut butter. But my daily go to is their Chocolate Keto Protein……… in my coffee 🤤🤤
WHEY PROTEIN– Depending on the type of protein you use will determine what other ingredients you should add. For example, whey protein expands into an airy fluff when blended, so less fruit and liquid is best. I recommend this whey protein. After lots of research, I have found this to have the best ingredients, which is important if your drinking it daily.
PRO TIP– Blend smoothie ingredients until just incorporated before adding whey protein…. DO NOT OVER BLEND! (You’ll end up with more smoothie than you bargained for.)
CALLAGEN PEPTIDES- I love this powder! It’s an excellent source of protein and it has absolutely no flavor or weird consistancy! Boring?….. maybe, but the health benefits are essential for you joints, bones, hair and skin…… like, wrinkles!! It’s super easy to add to any beverage, even water. You can find it anywhere these days and usually with grass-fed conscious ingredients.
HEALTHY FATS- YAY!
My favorite food group! Good Fats are important! They are a perfect and healthy source for calorie burning energy. Believe it or not. Butter is Better! Real, grass fed butter of course, but maybe not in your smoothie.
For your smoothie I recommend:
🥑 Avocado- better on a piece of whole grain toast on the side, but if there’s no time for that, toss it in!
🌱 Hemp or Chia Seeds– Add these at the end, after your smoothie is blended smooth. Pour them right in the middle and blend for a few seconds on low until it’s just incorporated to avoid a goopy smoothie.
🥜 Almond Butter or Peanut Butter – Yummmm. Peanut Butter is another one of those, organic only ingredients…. No more Skippy! Non-organic peanuts are high in pesticides as well as fungus. They contain aflatoxin, which is a potential carcinogen. I agree with this article that explains the top 10 foods you should buy organic, and the reasons why…. check it out if you’re curious.
PRO TIP– Peanut Butter Powder Organic, Non-GMO, blends perfectly, tastes amazing, doesn’t get stuck to the blender. 👍🏼
ROOTS & SUPPLEMENTS
Smoothies are a great place to incorporate all kinds of nutrition into your diet. A daily dose of Ginger or Turmeric can have exceptional health benefits. From an upset tummy to arthritis, and even depression. You can add a tiny piece of fresh ginger to your smoothies, believe it or not, the taste goes with any smoothie recipe. Otherwise, try these health shot recipes I found.

TOP IT OFF
Top your smoothie off with something crunchy, sweet, sticky and exciting for your mouth! I like to swirl in ribbons of local honey coated with sticky bee pollen or crunchy goji berry granola recipe with sweet morsels of fresh sliced banana.
PRO TIP– Swirl in bee pollen rather than blending it. I don’t know why, but it makes for an unappetizing gelatinous smoothie when blended…..IMO 😚
